What do failed 3D prints cost?

You pay for every failed print through the successful ones. Here is how to account for it and how to lower it.

How to account for waste

If part of your prints fail, the successful prints pay for them.

Cost per successful print = cost of one print ÷ (1 − failure rate)

For our standard print (50 grams, 5 hours) the cost without failures is €2.18. At 10% failures that becomes €2.42, at 30% €3.11.

Effect of failures on cost

Failure rateCost per printExtra costIncrease
0%€2.18--
2%€2.22€0.04+2%
5%€2.29€0.11+5%
10%€2.42€0.24+11%
20%€2.72€0.54+25%
30%€3.11€0.93+43%

The calculation assumes the full print. A print often fails halfway, in which case the cost is lower.

How to find your own failure rate

Note for a while whether each print succeeds. Divide the number of failed prints by the total. Enter that percentage in the calculator under "Failed prints".

How to lower failures

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of prints fail normally?

That varies a lot by printer and experience. Count your own prints: divide the number of failed prints out of the last 20 by 20.

Why does the calculator use a failure rate?

Because failed prints cost material, electricity and print time you do not get back. Those costs are spread over the successful prints.

Does a failed print always cost the full print time?

No, prints often fail halfway. Our calculation assumes the full print and is therefore cautious.

How do I lower my failure rate?

Dry filament, a clean build plate, good bed leveling, checking the first layer and adjusting supports help the most.
