In short
- Etsy charges about 13% of a € 20 order per sale, including payment processing.
- Marktplaats (the largest Dutch classifieds site): a standard listing is free for private sellers. With Direct Kopen the buyer pays for buyer protection.
- Your own webshop: no commission, but monthly and payment fees, and you have to bring in visitors yourself.
- If you sell regularly, check the rules for business registration and VAT.

Which platform suits you?
- Etsy if you make something unique, such as personalised name signs or your own designs. Fees are higher, but buyers find you more easily.
- Marktplaats for practical items and spare parts in the Netherlands, and if buyers can also pick up.
- Your own webshop if you already have an audience, for example through social media or a community.
Mind the licence
Many models on Printables, MakerWorld and Thingiverse may only be printed for yourself. A licence with NC (non-commercial) prohibits selling. So mainly sell your own designs or models with a commercial licence.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sell any model from the internet?
No. Always check the licence. A licence with NC (non-commercial) does not allow selling prints. Some designers offer a separate commercial licence.
Do I need to charge VAT on 3D prints I sell?
That depends on your country and on how often and how much you sell. Check the rules of your tax authority before you start selling regularly.
How much do I keep from a sale on Etsy?
On a € 20 order Etsy keeps about € 2.59 for sellers in the Netherlands. Shipping, packaging and your print costs still have to come off.
